Welcome to Plymouth Michigan, home to 8,988 residents located in an area surrounded by Plymouth Charter Township in Wayne County. The town of Plymouth covers 2.22 miles, is 15.6 miles east of Ann Arbor, just over 26 miles west of downtown Detroit, south of the M-14 highway and west of I-75. Citizens from the city of Plymouth and Plymouth Township have worked to create a welcoming community with that perfect mix of small town atmosphere and big city amenities. This charming community is the place to meet friendly people whether you’re planning a visit or you want to call Plymouth your home.
The settlers found their way to Plymouth in 1825 and became a village in 1867. In 1932 Plymouth was incorporated as a city. George Starkweather, child born to the first settlers, saw the importance of adding a railroad to the community. The North village of Plymouth became the new center point of the town with a new road built through Mr. Starkweather’s property, allowing room for new stores to prosper. The new road set the stage for the railroad which was built in 1871 by the Pere Marquette Railroad. This railroad is the only railroad in the state of Michigan where the tracks go in all four directions, allowing import/export trade to come and go from all four locations. Before this railroad was built the only means of transportation was known as the “Plymouth Plank Road”, a toll road used from 1850-1872. The planks were situated on the right side of the road for heavy wagons going to the market. Traveling back from the market the empty wagons were able to use the dirt side, where there was no charge for the trip home.
Don’t let the small town charm fool you…there are plenty of job opportunities for hungry job seekers. Plymouth is home to many high-tech research facilities relating to the auto industry market. Companies like Johnson Controls, Isuzu, Tower Automotive, Bosch, Tram, and Freudenberg Nok offer opportunities for employment. Plymouth is home to many manufacturing companies leaving room for growth and jobs for many who plan to reside here. Don’t forget you are only 26 miles from Detroit, the Automotive Capitol of the World!
The cozy town of Plymouth lacks for nothing if you’re looking for something to do.
