Canton is a charter township located in Wayne County Michigan, around 10 miles west of Downtown Detroit and 8 miles east of Ann Arbor. As of the 2010 census this budding township had a population of 90,173, making it Michigan’s second largest township. The growing township covers a land area of 36 square miles and has an elevation of 679 square feet according to Wikipedia.

Dating back to 1829 Canton began as Nankin and Pekin. The town was re-named Reford in 1833. The following year the town was re-named The Township of Canton due to the Michigan Territorial Legislative Act of 1834. Canton was created from a portion of Plymouth Township and named in honor of the provincial capital of Canton, Imperial China. In April of 1834 the township held their first meeting. The discovery of the Asian beetle known as the Emerald Ash Borer in 2002 would create more history as the beetle infested the entire Great Lake Region.
